Education & Flag Committee

(Bylaws – Article VII)

The Education and Flag Committee, with the Fifth Vice President General as chairman, shall be charged with the duty of stimulating interest in the early history of Texas, especially in the State schools, colleges and universities. The committee members shall familiarize themselves with the standard and current publications dealing with the early history of Texas. They shall review the histories used in the public schools, colleges and universities of the State and recommend to the BOM any additions or changes which should be sent to the State Commissioner of Education. This committee shall make every effort to have Texas history a required course in all State-financed schools, including elementary schools, junior high or middle schools, senior high schools, colleges and universities.

The Education and Flag Committee shall conduct an annual Outstanding Seventh (7th) Grade Texas History Teacher Contest, an annual Outstanding Fourth (4th) Grade Texas History Teacher Contest, a Texas History Essay Contest for Seventh (7th) Grade Students, and a Texas History Essay Contest for Fourth (4th) Grade Students. The committee shall forward the topics for the essay contests to the Chapter Presidents. The committee shall present awards to the winners of the contests at the Annual Convention.

The Education and Flag Committee shall assemble data concerning the history of the Texas flag and other flags used in Texas before and during the days of the Republic of Texas. They shall encourage the proper display of the Texas flag throughout the State at all times, especially by schools and colleges. They shall call attention to the State law which makes the second day of March (2 March) Flag Day as well as Texas Independence Day.
